If the art in this strip looks significantly better than that of the strips immediately before and after it (albeit still leaving plenty of room for improvement), there's a very simple reason for that: it was drawn much later than the strips immediately before and after it. This was one of several Sunday strips that I skipped over during the comic's initial run when I was in danger of running behind (or, for the later strips, actually was running behind), intending to fill them in later. I eventually did complete this strip (obviously), but not until more than two months later (December 2, to be exact). This, as it turned out, was nothing compared to how late some strips would be later on...
I just noticed on rerunning this strip that the fourth and sixth panels are taking place in the same room (the characters from the fourth panel can be seen in the background of the sixth, from a reverse angle—and vice versa, to a lesser extent). I honestly didn't remember having done that, so it was a bit of a surprise to me. Huh. I wonder if there are any other little details like that in these old strips that I've completely forgotten about...
