This is the first strip where that bench is seen from above. The bench itself, of course, has been seen before a lot; Erlak hangs out there all the time. It appeared in the very first strip, even. In fact, it's the only inanimate object I have a separate template file for, full of views from different "camera angles" for reference (yes, okay, and for copying and pasting—it's an inanimate object; it doesn't move or change facial expressions; so I think copying and pasting it is permissible).
But, well, I like varying my camera angles, and for this strip I decided to draw the second panel from an overhead view. Which meant I had to decide what the bench looked like from overhead.
Why is this significant? Well, because it meant that the seat of the bench was visible, so I had to decide what it looked like. And I decided it was engraved with a map of the world where Soup takes place. Which meant I had to design how the world was laid out. I hadn't actually done that before; while I had the main plot of the strip planned out in advance, the geography of the world I was pretty much making up as I went along. So now suddenly, for this one strip, I had to come up with the complete map of the world. So I did.
And, of course, in the strip, because Erlak and Nizini are sitting on the bench, barely any of the seat is visible. Well, so it goes.
