Soup the Comic Strip by Alun Clewe
Comic strip for November 26 2023.
PANEL ONE: Erlak's champion and Maiz ride the giant rat Nezhoni across grassy hills. CHAMPION: You know, sometimes it's kind of weird to think that we were all once children... before that, that we were all once just tiny babies... PANEL TWO: Close on Nezhoni and the champion. NEZHONI: Hey, you call 'em tiny... I call 'em bite-size. PANEL THREE: The champion and Maiz continue riding Nezhoni across the landscape. CHAMPION: I mean, having Maiz along has been making me think about my own childhood. PANEL FOUR: Extreme closeup of the champion in profile. CHAMPION: I mean, look at me now. I'm a divine champion. I've spoken with gods... well, a god, anyway. I'm, uh, riding a giant rat. PANEL FIVE: Overhead view of the champion and Maiz riding Nezhoni CHAMPION: But there was a time when I was just a kid, the same age as Maiz... before any of that happened. When I had dreams, I had hopes, I had plans, but they were all so far off in the future; there was still so much time to fulfill them; there were still so many possibilities... PANEL SIX: Extreme closeup of the champion, front view CHAMPION: Since then, I think I've done some good, and I've made a lot of mistakes, but one way or the other I've come a long way from what I was. And we're all like that — we were all children once, with most of our lives yet to be written. We weren't always what we are today. PANEL SEVEN: Nezhoni's head leans up to address the champion. NEZHONI: Yeah, well, I wasn't always a giant talking rat, either. PANEL EIGHT: Close on the champion. CHAMPION: See what I mean? We all go through so many changes... PANEL NINE: The champion and Maiz continue riding Nezhoni PANEL TEN: Same as the previous panel, but the champion is suddenly struck by a thought. PANEL ELEVEN: The champion leans down to talk to Nezhoni. CHAMPION: Um... what were you before? NEZHONI: Maybe I was something that wouldn't bite someone's nose off for asking too many questions...

So the fonts I made for Soup have separate capital and lower-case letters, but except for the letter I, they only differ in size, and that only slightly. Which means sometimes the difference is easy to miss, and I found while I was relettering these strips that apparently sometimes I had missed them. In one panel in last Sunday's strip I'd forgotten to capitalize the first letter of Erlak's name, but more egregiously, in the third panel of this strip I had capitalized the first three letters of Maiz's name ("MAIz"). It's fixed now, of course; I may not have noticed it myself, but that doesn't mean a reader might not notice and be bothered by it. Anyway, there's no guarantee I may not make that same mistake again, because my incompetence is limitless.
